    With a Bachelor's degree in (International) Business Administration, Economics or Econometrics and Operations Research from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam you are admissible provided you have a GPA of a 7.0 or higher and you successfully meet the requirements in this document

  • I have a Dutch university level (WO) bachelor’s degree (VU bachelor’s degree, VU premaster or bachelor’s degree at another university)

    Admission requirements  
    The Digital Business & Innovation programme is open to students with a university Bachelor's degree that provides a thorough knowledge in Business Administration, and in particular Information Systems and Innovation Management. You need to have a GPA of 7.0 or higher and successfully completed courses and studied literature related to the core of this programme, consisting of (or equivalents of): 

    At least 30 EC Business Administration courses, including at least 6 EC Information Systems, 6 EC Innovation Management, and 6 EC Research Methods (apart from statistics).

    Generally admissible 
    Applicants with at least a Bachelor's degree from another accredited university are admissible if they have a specialization in Business Administration, witnessed by thorough knowledge of the standard literature described above (or its equivalent) and a GPA of 7.0 or higher.

    If you do not meet the requirements with regard to courses completed, you might be admissible on the condition that you follow (an) additional course(s) to remedy deficiencies.

  • I have a Dutch higher vocational education (HBO) bachelor’s degree (premaster)

    You will gain direct admission after completing the premaster programme; this is a full-time programme with courses on at least three days per week.

    Premaster programme
    The premaster programme is a deficiency programme that provides the necessary knowledge and prepares you for this master's programme. It is a 30 EC program that takes place in the second semester, from February through July. These courses involve both content as well as academic skills and knowledge, and research methods.

    Admission requirements
    The premaster programme has two admission requirements:

    1. You have an hbo degree
    2. You have a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) combined score of at least 550 for the parts Verbal and Quantitative. Also note the following:
      • The score may not be older than five years, counted from the date you start with the premaster
      • The Integrated Reasoning and Analytical Writing Assessment score do not count for admission
      • You can use a Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) score for the parts Verbal and Quantitative to satisfy the GMAT score requirement. To convert your GRE score to its GMAT equivalent, use the GRE Comparison Tool!

    GMAT and GRE
    A GMAT score of at least 550 or an equivalent GRE score is a requirement to participate in the premaster programme. Please fill in the test that 'Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam' may receive your score. The official score will be sent by GMAT to VU. Please note that it may take up to 20 calendar days for the VU to receive your GMAT score, so plan GMAT on time.

    The School of Business and Economics (SBE) offers a course in preparation for the GMAT, the GMAT preparation course. The preparation course starts each year in August. For more information, please visit the website of the GMAT preparation course.

    Admission Requirements

    In order to gain admission to our Master’s programme, you need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 EC or equivalent. We do not require a GRE or GMAT test score (but encourage you to submit if you have one). You need to have successfully completed courses and studied literature related to the core of this programme, consisting of (or equivalents of) at least 30 EC in Business Administration courses, including at least 6 EC Information Systems, 6 EC Innovation Management, and 6 EC Research Methods (apart from statistics):

    English language requirements

    The admission board wants to stress the intensity of the programme: reading scientific articles and writing papers will be a key part, all in a very high pace. Your English language skills, both oral and written, are extremely important in this programme. As you will have to communicate frequently with your fellow students and you will be working with and for international companies.

    VU Amsterdam requires all applicants to take an English test. You can, however, begin your application without having the test results. Exceptions are made for students who have completed a bachelor or master in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia.

    The minimum English language proficiency requirements for admission to this Master's programme are:

    Please note that students who need a study visa must submit their English test results before 1 June. All other students have to submit the test certificate before 31 August (preferably sooner).

    TOEFL and IELTS tests must have been completed no more than two years before 1 September of the year in which your course starts. Note that TOEFL MyBestScore is not accepted. Our institution code is 7947.

  • Application procedure with an international degree

    Applying with an international degree

    If you have read the admission criteria and feel you are eligible for admission, please take the following steps to submit your application. Note that the initial application procedure is fully online and that scans of your original documents are required.

    Step 1: Review the admission criteria

    Step 2: Prepare your documents and apply online  
    Please prepare the following documents. You can find an explanation of each document on the application page. All documents should be provided in English.

    • Copy of your valid passport or ID (only for EU citizens)
    • Curriculum Vitae
    • Motivation letter
    • Transcript of records
    • A description of the courses you have taken during your previous higher education, that are relevant with respect to the ‘admission requirements (with an international degree)’. Don’t forget to mention the main literature used for the courses you took and the number of credits/class hours. Please use this format.
    • Thesis (or another sample of academic writing). If your thesis was not written in English, please submit the original with an added summary of about 3 pages in English.

    Step 3: Await the decision on admission
    The admission board will review your application as soon as it is complete. Normally this takes about four weeks, but it might take longer in busy periods so be sure to apply as soon as possible. If you are admitted to theprogramme, you will receive a letter of conditional admission by email. 

    Step 4: Finalise your registration!
    Make sure to finalise your registration as a student before the start of the programme. Here you will find an explanation on what to do after you are admitted. When all of the conditions are met, you will be ready to start your programme at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam! 

    Application fee & deadlines

    All students seeking admission to an international Bachelor’s or Master’s programme with an international degree are required to pay a non-refundable €100 application fee. Only after you have paid this fee will we be able to start the evaluation of your application file. If you are applying for more than one programme, you will only need to pay the application fee once. Your application fee payment is valid for two years.

  • Premaster programme for international students

    All international students are required to apply for the Master's programme of their choice first. If you do not meet the admission requirements directly, you could gain admission after completing the premaster programme.

    The premaster programme is a deficiency programme that provides the necessary knowledge and skills to prepare you for this Master's programme. It is a programme of 30 ECTS that is offered in the second semester, from February through July. Content details of the offered premasters can be found here.

    Admission requirements for the premaster programme

    • You have a Bachelor's degree from a non-Dutch university or from a non-Dutch university of applied science (which is equal to at least a Dutch Hbo degree).
    • You have a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) combined score of at least 550 for the parts Verbal and Quantitative. Also note the following:

    Deadlines and application
    The programme starts 1 February. Because of visa application deadlines, non-EU citizens must have submitted their application before 1 November. EU citizens or students with a valid residence permit for the Netherlands have until January 31st to complete their application. However, to make sure everything is arranged before the enrolment deadline it is advised to submit your application well before this date.

  • FAQ for students with a Dutch degree

    Can I be admitted into an SBE Master with my Dutch university degree?

    The admission board can make a decision regarding your admissibility based on several documents. Apply for the Master via Studielink and complete your application in VUweb by uploading the required documents. Some Master programmes require additional documents such as an English CV and motivation letter, as well as your transcript of records. You will receive an admission decision within a couple of weeks after completing your application. Registration for the Master via Studielink is without obligation and does not commit you to anything yet.

    I have a higher vocational (HBO) degree. Do I need to complete the premaster before I can start with an SBE Master?

    Yes, we require all students with an HBO higher vocational Bachelor degree to complete the corresponding premaster before they can start with the Master. More information on the premaster can be found here.

    I have a higher vocational (HBO) degree and wish to start with an SBE Master that does not have a specific premaster (MSc Econometrics & Operations Research, MSc Economics, MSc Spatial, Transport and Environmental Economics). How do I apply?

    Please send your transcript of records directly to admissions.sbe@vu.nl/ toelating.sbe@vu.nl. Make sure the name of your education and institution are visible.

    I have a higher vocational (HBO) degree and wish to start the premaster. Can a high GPA grant me exemption from the GMAT?

    No, the admission board does not take your GPA into account in the admission process for the premaster. All students who wish to start the premaster are required to complete the GMAT first. No exceptions can be made.

    I do not want to start with a master in the next academic year, but the year after. How do I know if I am eligible?

    You can still apply for the Master that starts in the next academic year via Studielink. Registration for the Master is without obligation and does not commit you to anything yet. If you need to complete additional courses in order to be admissible, you can do so during the next academic year. Because the admission decisions are valid for one year, make sure to check in advance if the admission requirements have not changed.

    I am already completing a Master at a Dutch university. Can I be directly admitted into one of the SBE Masters?

    You cannot be automatically admitted into one of the SBE Masters. First, your application needs to be reviewed by the admission board of the Master in the same way as all Bachelor students. Please apply for the Master via Studielink and upload all required documents. You can use an online PDF merger to upload both your Bachelor grades and (preliminary) Master grades.

Coronavirus: additional information admission

  • General Information

    Due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, both our current as well as prospective students may encounter study delays (despite several actions taken to facilitate the completion of their programmes). To facilitate transitions within programmes (BSc) as well as to new programmes (MSc) a number of policies have been developed again for the upcoming academic year 2021-2022 in collaboration with the government and other universities.

    Please note that if you already made use of the so-called ‘Zachte Knip’ or ‘Soft-cut’ for the academic year 2020 – 2021 and are still in the same study phase as then, you will not be eligible to use it again.

    If you wish to be admitted to the Master’s programme without having completed your Bachelor’s studies and you meet the requirements stated below, please fill in this form.

  • Transition from BSc programs to full-time MSc programs – national and EU

    The below does not apply to admission to the part-time program in Accounting and Control, as this program starts twice a year.  

    In accordance with the agreements made with the Dutch government, VU Amsterdam has developed guidelines for the so-called “zachte knip” (soft cut, i.e., transferring from BSc to MSc program without completing the BSc yet.) 

    Based on these guidelines and previous experience with the “zachte knip”, the following requirements have now been developed for admission to SBE full-time programs : 

    Students are allowed to miss a total of 18EC of their BSc degree program (10% of the total of 180EC than can be obtained), provided that: 

    • a) The student has completed his/her BSc Thesis 
    • b) The general qualitative entry requirements for the specific program are met (as stipulated with other academic degree holders), rather than specific courses (as is now the case for our own BSc students). 

    For example, the MSc Marketing requires, in general terms:

    • A university Bachelor's degree that provides a sufficient foundation in Marketing and Consumer Behaviour
    • Successfully completed courses and studied literature related to the core of this programme, consisting of
      • a) at least 18 EC in course work on Marketing and Consumer Behaviour, and
      • b) at least 12 EC related to statistics (to a level of being able to use techniques such as (multiple) regression, ANOVA and factor analysis).

    Requests for exemptions can be submitted via the usual procedures. The remaining 18EC need to be completed before September 1, 2022. If not, students will not be able to apply for their MSc degree. We have opted for the 10% maximum of missing EC, as it would be unlikely for students to have a reasonable chance of completing their MSc program otherwise. Even with 18EC missing, this is challenging. Students that start with a deficiency will therefore proactively be invited by the academic advisors to discuss their situation and see if they can offer help where needed. 

    Note: for non-EEA students, the regular rules apply.

  • Transition from premaster programs to respective MSc programs

    Note: this applies to the premaster programs of the MSc in Business Administration , Entrepreneurship, Transport and Supply Chain Management, Finance, Marketing, Digital Business and Innovation and the full-time MSc Accounting and Control. 

    There is a separate policy for the transition from the premaster to the part-time MSc Accounting and Control (see point 4 and 5). 

    Students are allowed to miss a total of 12EC of their premaster program (40% of the total of 30EC than can be obtained), provided that the student has completed his/her Academic paper. 

    This 40% deviates from the VU guideline of 10-20% EC not completed. This is motivated by the fact that: 

    -  Our pre-master program only starts in semester 2 (contrary to most other programs at the VU) and our students are therefore disproportionally affected by the crisis; 

    -  The premaster program, for a substantial part, consist of courses that are part of larger scale programs. In replanning all assessments, the planning for the core program takes preference over the premaster, which in some cases might lead to less favourable circumstances for the premaster students (despite customized measures being taken as well). 

    - In normal circumstances, many of our premaster students perform well, both in the premaster as well as in the master program. The GMAT is an important selective criterium here. Hence, we are less concerned about the students that are not sufficiently ready to start the master will gain access via this route after all. 

    The remaining 12EC need to be completed before September 1, 2022. If not, students will not be able to apply for their MSc degree. Also here, students that start with a deficiency will proactively be invited by the academic advisors to discuss their situation and see if they can offer help where needed.  

    Note: for enrolment in the premaster starting in February 2022, the regular procedure and requirements will be applied, given that this program only starts in semester 2.

  • Transition from premaster program Accounting and Control to the part-time master Accounting and Control

    This specific regulation applies to the premaster program of the MSc Accounting and Control, which has a different structure and has a different structure and is mostly directed at students that want to enrol for the Part-time MSc Accounting and Control. 

    The part-time master has two entry moments, in September and in February. Hence, for this premaster, in line with the VU guidelines, we refer to the two moments of MSc entry, and will not offer a “zachte knip ”.

    Students can apply for a hardship exception if they can show that, because of specific personal circumstances arising out of the corona crisis, they will suffer a disproportionate delay if the regular criteria for admission to the MSc program are applied. This also applies to students in the premaster program that aim to enter the full-time program in September, 2021.

    Note: For Bachelor students that want to enter the MSc Accounting, we refer to the regulation for all BSc students.

  • Transition from applied Science (“HBO”) to the premaster Accounting and Control starting Sept 2021

    For enrolment in the premaster Accounting and Control the regular procedure and requirements will be applied, given that this program starts twice a year with substantial self-study.
